Week 7 story:
by Celia Godkin
The Story of Wolf
Island
The Wolves on the Island
There is a beautiful island. Many animals live there. There are mice, rabbits,
and deer. There is also a family of wolves: a mother, a father, and five pups.
The island has lots of food. All the animals are healthy.
The Wolves Leave
One day, the wolf pups find a raft on the water. They climb onto it. The raft
moves away from the island. The parents swim to the raft to help. The raft goes
to the mainland. Now, the wolf family is not on the island anymore.
Problems on the Island
On the island, things change. There are no wolves to hunt the deer. Soon, there
are too many deer. The deer eat all the grass and leaves. Now, the rabbits and
mice have no food. They become hungry. The foxes and owls have no food because
there are no rabbits or mice.
The Cold Winter
Winter comes. It is very cold with deep snow. The animals are very hungry and
weak. Some animals die. Even the deer have no food. They eat the bark of the
trees, and the trees die.
The Wolves Return
The weather gets colder. Ice forms on the water. The ice makes a bridge from
the mainland to the island. The wolf family is hungry, so they walk across the
ice. They return to their old home.
The Island is Healthy
Again
The wolves hunt the sick and weak deer. Now, there are fewer deer. The grass
and trees grow back. There is food for the rabbits and mice again. The island
is in balance. All the animals are happy and healthy again.
