文字方塊: Once upon a time in ancient China, there was a scary monster named Nian.
He lived deep in the ocean, but every year on the last night of winter, he would crawl onto land to gobble up grain, animals, and even people.
Everyone was terrified.
They would lock their doors and hide in the mountains to stay safe.
One year, a wise old man visited a village.
He told the people, "Don't be afraid. I know what the monster hates most."
He shared three secrets:
The color red: It is too bright for the monster's eyes.
Fire: He is scared of bright, flickering flames.
Loud noises: His ears are very sensitive to cracking sounds.
The villagers pasted red paper on their doors and wore red clothes.
They lit big fires and threw bamboo stems into the flames, which made a loud sound.
When Nian arrived, he saw the red glow and heard the deafening noise.
He was so startled that he turned around and ran back to the sea, never to bother the village again.
