3. Story summary:
Grandma and the Great Gourd
Grandma is an old woman.
She lives in India.
Her home is a small hut near a dark jungle.
She has two dogs. Their names are Kalu and Bhulu.
They protect her and help in the garden.
One day, Grandma gets a letter.
Her daughter lives on the other side of the jungle.
The letter says, "Please come and visit me."
Grandma wants to go.
She walks into the jungle.
She meets a fox, a bear, and a tiger.
All of them are hungry.
They want to eat Grandma.
Grandma says, "I am too thin now.
Wait for me. I will be fat after I visit my daughter."
The animals wait.
Grandma stays with her daughter for many days.
She eats good food. She works in the garden.
Grandma becomes fat.
Now Grandma must go home.
But the animals are waiting to eat her!
Her daughter has a clever plan.
They take a big gourd.
They cut it open and take out the seeds.
Grandma climbs inside.
Her daughter closes the gourd.
The gourd rolls into the jungle.
The tiger sees the gourd. He pushes it.
The bear sees the gourd. He pushes it.
The fox sees the gourd. He is clever.
He hears a voice inside.
He opens the gourd. Grandma falls out!
The fox is happy. He wants to eat her.
Grandma says, "Please let me sing one last song."
The fox says yes.
Grandma sings loudly.
Kalu and Bhulu hear her song.
They run fast into the jungle.
Kalu and Bhulu bark and growl at the fox.
The fox runs away and never comes back.
Grandma is safe. She hugs her dogs.
She goes home and cooks a meal.
Everyone is happy.
