Living in Deserts

 by Tea Benduhn

What is a Desert?
A desert is a very dry place. It has very little rain. Some deserts are very hot, like the Sahara. Some deserts are very cold, like Antarctica.

Living with Heat
It is very hot in the day and cold at night. People wear loose clothes to stay cool. Some people live in houses with thick walls. This keeps the house cool. Other people live underground to hide from the sun.

Finding Water
Water is very important. People live near an oasis. An oasis is a place with water and plants in the desert. People can grow food there, like dates.

Moving in the Desert
Some people are nomads. They do not stay in one place. They move to find water for their animals. They use animals like camels. Camels are good for the desert because they can live without water for a long time.

The Modern Desert
Today, many people live in desert cities. They use air conditioning to stay cool. They use pumps to get water from deep in the ground.

Key Vocabulary :

·         Dry: No water.

·         Loose: Not tight (for clothes).
